Frequently asked questions
How do I track a train?
Enter the train number or name in the search bar on the homepage, or browse the trains list. Open any train to see its live position, schedule and status.
How often is the data updated?
Positions are recalculated every minute. When passengers on the train share their location, the position follows them; otherwise it is estimated from the timetable and the train's recent delays, and marked as an estimate.
What do the different train statuses mean?
Running: the train is on its way. Scheduled: it hasn't departed yet. Completed: it has reached its destination. Cancelled: the service is cancelled today.
Can I use this on my mobile?
Yes. WhereIsTheTrain works in every phone browser, and you can add it to your home screen for quick access.
Is the data accurate?
We do not receive Indian Railways' official running data. Positions marked "Estimated" come from the timetable and recent delays and can be off when a train is held up; positions confirmed by passengers on board are much more precise. Always confirm important travel plans with official sources such as NTES or 139.
Which trains can I track on WhereIsTheTrain?
Over 5,000 Indian Railways trains — Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, Duronto, superfast, express, mail, passenger, MEMU and DEMU — across every state and zone.
Is WhereIsTheTrain free to use?
Yes, WhereIsTheTrain is completely free, with no sign-up. We want train information to be available to everyone in India.
